It’s all his

The pasture, the puddles, the pond.

His real domain is loyalty.

He sits at attention when I leave, watching me drive away.

As if he’s telling me to “Have a nice day.”

When I get home, he is waiting at the gate.

Did he hear me on the canyon road?

His butt shakes. His tail twirls. His smile shows his teeth.

When I walk, he runs, but not too far.

Back to my side to make sure I’m safe.

He seems to be grateful for this life.

Not knowing the gratitude is mine.

I get it, dogs are the best friends and companions for us humans. I had to put my “Magoo” down in January after 15 + years. He acted like he was 5 years old. I still miss him daily.
