Sagebrush in Spring

As Mark Twain famously said, sagebrush country is a “forest in exquisite miniature.”

The aroma changes with the weather, mercurial in the spring.

An essential food for birds who call my canyon home, along with the deer and rabbits.

Nearly 100 bird species depend on sagebrush country for their habitat needs- some highly dependent, small as they may be, they are magnificent though in peril.

White sage is most prized for a smudge to bless and purify.

Thus my home is pure and blessed. A sanctury to the small and needy.

And to me.
